Elijah told the prophets of Baal to pray to their gods to make it rain. He told them to pray harder. Then, when there was no rain he said to them ‘maybe your gods are sleeping. Maybe they haven’t woken up yet.’ After this, he asked the people to fetch him four large water pots – to pour over the decking. Such was his un-shaking and un-doubting faith in God.

But this is the same Elijah that fled from Jezebel. He ran and ran and ran – later to be found under a tree.

‘Elijah was afraid and ran for his life……….
He came to a broom tree, sat down under it and prayed that he might die. “I have had enough Lord” he said. “Take my life. I am no better than my ancestors.”

1st Kings 19 vs 3 – 6

What happened? How did a man of passionate faith and unflinching courage become a man so scared for his life – to the point of being suicidal?

When we are filled with the Holy spirit we are capable of achieving anything and fear absolutely nothing.

‘Greater is He that is inside of us than He that is on the outside.’

1st John 4 vs 4

However there will be times when we are not so filled with the Holy spirit. At these times
we’re not so courageous and powerful.
So – there are times when we are up and there are times when we are rather far from up.

Elijah was a human being -just like you and I. And like all human beings he too was capable of massive high points in his life as well as huge low ones. It is during the low points in life that we find out who we really are.

When things are not going your way; when everything seems so difficult; when you don’t feel that you are capable of achieving your objectives; when everything seems to be conspiring against your progress, how do you react?

Let’s be real here. We all experience moments when we feel a little sorry ourselves. Those thoughts that maybe this is not your path; the temptation to try something safer – something in your comfort zone. But these are the moments when you need to cling to your vision of your purpose and your mission.

These are actually the moments that enable you to become stronger in your faith; stronger in your resolve, and stronger in your belief in yourself. There is no-one that can claim to have made no mistakes in life. No successful person can claim not to have failed a few times on their way to success. It’s learning from mistakes and failures that help us to grow into the people that we need to be to accomplish our mission.

Thomas Edison tried over a thousand times before he got it right. Bill Gates was turned down by IBM. Steve Jobs was more or less sacked by his own company. Barack Obama failed four times to be elected a senator. But the reason we all know about them now is because they never gave up. They made mistakes. They failed many times. I’m sure some of those close to them thought they were nuts to keep trying over and over again. But they held on to their passion. They held on to their vision. They held on to their purpose. They never gave up, until eventually they succeeded.

Much later on the Lord said to Elijah, “Go back the way you came, and go to the desert of Damascus. When you get there, anoint Hazael king over Aram.”

1st Kings 19 vs 15

Elijah did as the Lord directed. He’d had his low point. He’d had his huge moment of serious doubt. But he kept trusting and obeying God. He didn’t give up. He went on to fulfil his purpose.

There will be many highs and there will be many lows.

Always keep your eyes on fulfilling your purpose.

Always keep going. You will make it.
